Fifth Grade Literacy Objectives



 Writes with purpose, organization, details and voice, using technology to collaborate with others, for specific audiences and time frames, in the genres of opinion/argument, informative/ explanatory, and narrative.

 c. Includes adequate and relevant details.

 d. Draws evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, & research.

 Opinion writing: supports opinion with facts and details.

 e. Uses voice and tone to establish the appropriate style.

 f. Uses all steps of the writing process: plan, draft, revise, proof and publish including the use of technology where appropriate.



Reads routinely over extended time frames.

b. Reads the equivalent of:

    • At least 2 different genres per trimester.
    • At least 3 different authors per trimester.
    • At least 2 books by one author, 2 books about one subject, or 2 books in one genre per trimester.


Reads and comprehends literary and informational text with purpose.

a. Foundational Skills:

Reads accurately & fluently to meet grade level expectations.

b. Uses comprehension strategies:

    • Makes connections
    • Makes predictions
    • Makes inferences
    • Text features
    • Identifies main ideas and key details
    • Asks questions
    • Summarizes
    • Cites textual evidence to support analysis.
    • Compares and contrasts two or more texts on the same topic, including structure and point of view.


Understands and uses grade appropriate vocabulary, including general academic and domain-specific words and phrases.

a. Selects appropriate words or explains the use of words in context

    • content-specific vocabulary
    • words with multiple meanings.


Uses verbal and nonverbal skills to engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions.

a. Uses body language and active listening skills to listen and respond appropriately to peers and adults in large and small group work (ex: class discussions and guest speaker presentations)

b. Offers unique and relevant comments and/or questions that build on others’ ideas to advance the group understanding of the topic.


Conveys commanding understanding of a topic to a range of audiences using a range of multimedia components.

a. Uses body language, eye contact, volume, and rate of speech, etc. to effectively convey accurate information, including answering questions accurately, to a small or large audience (ex: presentations, speeches, science fair, etc.)

b. Uses formal or informal register based on audience and type of presentation

c. Includes multimedia components (e.g. graphics, images, music, sound) and visual displays in presentations to clarify information.



Demonstrates grade level control over conventions, especially formatting, punctuation, capitalization, correct word usage, and spelling.

a. Punctuates correctly.

    • Uses commas (joining independent clauses to create a compound sentence, for items in a list, and to introduce a quotation)

b. Spells grade level vocabulary correctly.

c. Controls sentence structure and word choice.

d. Organizes writing in paragraphs.
