Fifth Grade Choral Music Curriculum Objectives


Singing alone and with others.

1a    Produce a clear tone using proper breathing and singing techniques.
1b    Sing with expression and technical accuracy.
1c    Perform two-part songs from memory.

Reading and notating music.

2a    Read and follow two-part choral octavos.
2b    Sightread melodic examples using solfege (do, re, mi, fa, sol).
2c    Sightread rhythmic examples using the count system (whole note, quarter note, half note, eighth note, dotted quarter note, sixteenth note, whole rest, half rest, quarter rest, eighth rest).
2d    Identify a variety of music symbols and terms.
2e    Notate rhythmic and melodic phrases alone and with others.

Listening to, analyzing and describing music.

3a    Create written and verbal responses to live performances and recorded examples.
3b    Compare and contrast the reading of lyrics to a song, to listening to, or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text. (Common Core Standard, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas 7)
3c    Determine the composer's point of view or purpose in the text and how it is conveyed. (Common Core Standard, Craft and Structure 6)
3d    Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone. (Common Core Standard, Craft and Structure 4)

Understanding music in relation to history and culture.

4a    Research historical events, timelines and the cultural background of a piece or composer.
4b    Describe the impact of historical events and culture had on a piece they are studying.
4c    Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies. (History/social studies, Craft and Structure 4)
