Fifth Grade Band Curriculum Objectives


5.1    Performing on instruments, alone, and with others, a varied repertoire of music.

5.1.1        Plays 1 and ½ octaves on a wind or basic rudiments on a percussion instrument.

5.1.2        Displays initial understanding of the proper embouchure and holding position for their instrument.

5.1.3        Plays music and can count rhythms contained in a level one method book.

5.1.4        Plays grade one sectional parts in an ensemble.

5.1.5        Begins to produce a quality tone on their instrument.

5.1.6   Begins to develop techniques for articulations and dynamics.

5.2    Reading and notating music

5.2.1        Sight-reads rhythms contained in a level one method book.

5.2.2        Sight-reads simple, short melodic phrases.

5.2.3        Accurately notates specific rhythms and pitches.

5.3    Listening to, analyzing, and describing music

5.3.1        Begins to identify the basic elements of a musical performance and can describe using proper terminology.

5.4    Evaluating music and music performance.

5.4.1        Listens to an ensemble and is able to discuss the quality of a performance.

5.4.2        Gives written or oral self-critique of a performance.

5.5    Understanding music in relation to history and culture.

5.5.1        Understands the historical and cultural themes presented for specific pieces.

5.6    Personal development standards

5.6.1        Student shows respect toward students, staff, and the learning environment.

5.6.2   Student shows initiative and completes quality work on time.
