**The Number System**

** **1a. Writes and computes with numbers in scientific notation

1. Uses scientific notation to estimate very large quantities and expresses comparisons between two quantities in this form (8.EE.3)

2. Computes with numbers expressed in scientific notation (8.EE.4)

3. Interprets scientific notation that has been generated by technology (8.EE.4)

1b. Properties of exponents

- 1.Knows and applies the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions (8.EE.1)

1c. Knows and approximates irrational numbers

1. Knows there are irrational numbers and uses rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers and locates them on a number line (8.NS.1; 8.NS.2)

2. Estimate the value of expressions containing irrational numbers (8.NS.2)
