Friday, April 27th, was the national Day of Silence sponsored by GLSEN.org. This event is observed in honor of LGBTQIA+ students across the nation who are unable to speak up for themselves or their identities. The MSMS GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) facilitated the event in our building. 100 students in grades 5-8 signed up to participate!
Students remained silent throughout the day to continue building empathy for those who feel silenced on a daily basis (using whiteboards and markers to participate in classes). At the end of the day, everyone who participated gathered for a Breaking the Silence ceremony where they pledged to speak out against hate and oppression.
