Students play a traditional Japanese New Years game during Culture Club

H

ello, again!  This week we finished up our study of multiplication and large numbers and turned our focus towards division in math.  We studied a new set of words & rules for spelling, met in our guided reading groups, worked on our readerÕs notebook entries, worked on our persuasive essays, and learned a bit about Japan during Culture Club.

In math, we applied some of the skills we have acquired in math as we completed a section of the World Tour by pretending to travel to Europe.  We also completed a test on this unit and moved on to Unit 6: Division, Map Reference Frames and Measures of Angles.  As always, on Fridays, we focus for ½ hour on math problem solving.

In writing, we focused on finishing our final draft of a persuasive essay.  The due date has been postponed until next Thursday.

In reading, we focused on our fourth readerÕs notebook entry (letter to me) to reflect on their reading.

Eri Takahashi (see below) gave our students a special treat by introducing them to Japanese culture.  She plans to spend extra time with this class over the next four weeks.

I hope you have a great weekend!

Culture Club

This week we had two sessions with Eri Takahashi, a teaching intern from Osaka, Japan.  Eri taught us about Japanese writing, numbers, greetings, and games kids play (see below).  Next week students will join with students from other 4th grade classes as they travel to other classrooms for two 90 minute sessions on another world culture (Canada, Kenya, Ireland, or Nicaragua).
